Why Thoughts On Veterans

WHY OH WHY can't some people who have not been in the military show more respect to veterans.  Veterans seem so kind and understanding.  Why are non-veterans scared to feel empathy for those who have served.  It seems manly and indeed womanly to be kind to these people...Why isn't this mode of thinking popular now?
