Jaki Byard - Giant Steps

Saul Bellow

MODERN WRITERS like Saul Bellow possess marvelous qualities.  I am reading again Bellow's crafty novel, 'The Victim.'  It is an intense saga of an angst-ridden soul named Asa Leventhal.  It is powerful writing personified.  I also recommend Mr Bellow's very feisty books, 'Augie March' and 'Herzog. Sophisticated works.

Jeanne Crain...Film Icon, Indeed

DANGEROUS CROSSING is a sly, engaging film noir movie.  The best thing about this oddnik film happens to be the fiercely elegant performnce of Jeanne Crain.  She thrillingly dominates this particular cinematic work.  Of course the crusty Michael Rennie is engaging in this one also.  Have fun with this coy, film noir morsel.

The Great One...Robin Williams...Has Passed

SHOCK HIT HARD TODAY!..When the news came on ABC this evening that Robin Williams had passed I broke down completely.  I have so many truly fantastic memories of the work of this tremendously creative man.  I remember one of my sons and how he loved Robin in the movie, 'Popeye.'  Also, I remember well the strong work Robin had in unique films like 'Good Will Hunting' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire.'  And of course there was Robin and his super working out in the marvelously funny TV show, ' Mork and Mindy.'  It is rough when the great ones leave us.  We appreciate from the bottom of our hearts the glorious passion of the mighty one, Mr. Williams.  R.I.P....ROBIN!

John Steinbeck...A Man Who Understood U.S. Culture

JOHN STEINBECK'S 1937 WORK and I met again.  Yes, I recently re-read Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men.'  I was amazed by his prose...his emotional dexterity in bringing to life the regular people...those who had little in the 1930s.  It is difficult to produce a literary work that has gigantic ripple effects on a country's culture. However, Steinbeck brought the 'Mice and Men; characters of George and Lenny wildly to life. This small book has a remarkable sense of style.  When you read this you discover what life is about and that is a good thing.

Nice Writing

THE GOOD terse writing of Ernest Hemingway is a real joy.  He does not use too many adjectives.  His 'Torrents' is a fine tome.
